Two
Addison women chained themselves to a doghouse all day long Thursday
in protest of people who chain their dogs.
The
two are among more than seventy people across the country who
chained themselves to doghouses for the "Dogs Deserve Better
Organization."
Kelly
Hendricks and Susan Buchanan sat on the side of Pennsylvania Avenue
in Pine City chained up for more than six hours Thursday. The
women say they see a lot of dogs chained up all day long in our
area, and they want it to stop.
“We're
talking about people who forget about their dogs being out there
and leave them there all the time. They live outside,” says
Kelly Hendrickson, who chained herself to a doghouse. “Give
them some contact. You know, they're part of your family.”
“Play
with them, walk them,” says Susan Buchanan, who also chained
herself to a doghouse. “Give them the proper care. Love
them, spay and neuter them, and just treat them like your family.”
The
womens' protest raised almost four hundreds dollars for dogs deserve
better.

protests dog chains

Imagine
being chained outside, day and night, rain or shine.
It
doesn't sound very pleasant, and that's why two Addison women
are protesting this lifestyle for dogs.
Susan
Buchanan and Kelly Hendrickson protested today in front of the
Furry Friends Pet Grooming Salon.
They
chained themselves to a dog house for six hours to send a message.
Buchanan
says she was inspired to take part in a nationwide "chain
off" event after coming across the website dogsdeservebetter.com.
"A
lot of people don't realize a chained dog is un-socialized,”
said Buchanan. “They're more apt to bite a child, or anyone
who wanders in their territory. That's their territory, that's
what they're used to."
"Bring
them into your home and treat them like a dog is supposed to be
treated. A dog is not supposed to be chained out in your backyard
and you forget about them. They're supposed to be part of your
family,” said Hendrickson.
Dinell
Lane, owner of the pet salon, says she supports the women.
"We're
here at Furry Friends are letting them know it's a wonderful cause,”
she said.
When
asked if she would join the women outside, Lane laughed and said,
“It’s too hot.”
