Day 49, The Wind go so Bad it Ripped the Number off the House

Day 49, October 7, 2010.
Operation Fido's Freedom.
Pit Bulls and Chaining

[Overweight, older white man with cane walks down steps behind me.]
Him: If it's a pitbull, you'd better just leave it on that chain.
Me: What? [Pretending I don't hear.]
Him: If it's a pitbull, leave it there.
Me: The pitbull should be in the house, then you don't have to worry about the chain at all.
Him: You can't have a pitbull in the house.
Me: Pitbulls are just like every other dog, and want to be with people more than anything else.
Him: Bah.
[Walks away.]

This one-act play on the steps of the Capitol today was brought to you by the chained lady and the overweight guy with the baseball cap. [Curtsy, bow.]

How can people be so grossly misinformed?

Now, I don't claim to be a pitbull expert, no more than I am a shepherd expert or an Akita expert. But I am a chained dog expert, and I can tell you this with 100% certainty: Pitbulls are THE most-abused dogs in America, they are the most-chained dogs in America, and they are owned by some of the biggest idiots in America.

Then we wonder why so many of them are involved in dog attacks? Look at the circle, people…here's what we do to the dog…and then here's what the dog does to us…

You give a pitbull to a thug, he's going to do one of three things with the dog: fight the dog, chain the dog (and then fight the dog or forget about the dog), or abuse the dog. Either way, that dog is going to turn mean just to save it's own skin.

I would too.

To review, the three biggest bite factors come from a male/unneutered/chained dog. Stop chaining all these pits, socialize them with people from a young age, give them love, and the fear-mongering would stop.

There are so many great groups working for pits out there…I highly commend you all, I know you have it tough, and we are in there with you getting these pitties off chains as we can. There's even a project underway called The StubbyDog Project to restore the good name of pit bulls.

Educate yourself and others about pits and don't leave your kids alone with ANY dog. Dogs are strong, they can do a lot of harm if they want to, and often they don't respect children. It can be a very bad combination.

Miscellaneous stuff from today:

I finally got more letters yesterday! I got a total of 19 letters (which includes 9 postcards from 10/11 year old students in the Netherlands)

It's been so long I don't even know where my total is now, but it's somewhere around 100. I know that some of you got your letters back, and for that I apologize…I think that happened a lot.

1-9. Chicera, Sebastian, Yewon, Jake, Rachel, Ellen, Vincent, Hannah, Alona from the Netherlands.

10. Alicia Schwartz, SC
11. Nancy Zermeno, TX
12. Shannon & Monica Severy, VA
13. Charidy & Gene Anaya, AZ
14. Spencer Simino, WV
15. Pam Morawski, MA
16. Gretchen Littlefield, IN
17. Kathy Rogers, MO
18. Carrie High, MO
19. Kitty, GA

Spencer Simino writes: "My name is Spencer and I'm 10. I heard about you from the yahoo homeschooler group. I really like what you're doing. One reason I am going to try to help your cause is because I love animals…Thank you for making me aware of this sad reality."

Hannah writes: "I'm Hannah, am eleven years old, I come from Holland, and saw your video on the internet and thought you're crazy, but no, it's super what you're doing so I hope the law changes."

Alona writes: "My name is Alona, and I'm from Israel. I love dogs and I even have one. I live in Holland and I'm 11 years old. Thank you for fighting for the dogs."
