Hero
by Amanda Green, DDB Rep, Hobbs, NM

Hero

Hero was originally only known as the shepherd mix in Cage #6 in Clovis, NM. He had never been given a name and had lived 14 years on a chain in a yard with no shelter.

Amanda Green, DDB Rep Hobbs, NM, sent out an urgent email looking for help for this “old man.” Marty and Dan came to the rescue and decided to give Hero a name and a home. Here is what they had to say after having Hero just a few days…

It is completely unbelievable what has transpired in just 3 days. Hero is alredy looking brighter and happier. His tail wags now and he follows us around everywhere. Dan took him to our vets on Friday morning. Jim Humphries said that his back is "old dog" but that his teeth, suprisingly enough, were in good shape. He put him on rimadyl, baby aspirin, and a high powered vitamin and mineral supplement. After two nights on an orthopedic dog bed and two days on the medications, Hero is walking much better.

He is a very good boy, although he did lift his leg once in my garden room on a bit potted plant! All in all, it is amazing how well he behaves for having been outside his whole life. He does not know any commands (no or come for instance), but he seems smart and I'll bet in a few weeks he will be doing fine.

One of our daughters started to cry after hearing his story. Even though Dan and I really didn't want to have another pet (we have 6 cats, 2 dogs, 3 sheep and 5 horses), we are feeling very blessed to have taken him.

I was at work on Thursday in Almagordo when I saw the email that the network had sent out. Without pausing a second, I called the phone number listed in the email and told "Natalie" who answered the phone that we would take him. I called Dan and he set off within an hour to drive over to Clovis to pick him up.

Two very nice girls had bathed him and cut his nails. When I got home on Friday, he was still rather sad looking and not too perky. He did wag his tail for me though. As of today, he simply looks great. He is definitely responding to the medications and love.

We have no idea how much longer he will live, after all 14 years is pretty old for a shepherd. As you can see from the pictures he is very German Shepherd. Beautiful ears! Jim gave him all the immunizations he felt were important, Hero was already neutered. He has a wonderful disposition and, as I have said, he is responding fabulously to affection.

Our goal is to give him all the love and attention and care that he has needed for the past 14 years. The girls in Cloveis named him by the way and we felt "Hero" was fitting. So Hero it is, we will keep you posted as time goes by. Marty
