Chain Off 2005, Lackawanna Stadium, PA

I
went through absolute hell for my Chain-Off.
I
basically lost my job (they would NOT give me the day off, but I
wouldn't reschedule it again, because it was already rescheduled.
I asked for the day weeks in advance, asked half the place to cover
for me...but I was on "counselling" because I didn't go
to work when they scheduled me on the same day as my college orientation...you
know, two months in advance notice wasn't enough, and making $50
is SO much more important than college...) but yeah, dogs are more
important than Target, so I overcame odds and still got to do it.
Everyone
copped out on me. The other "dog" called me 2 hours prior
to the demo, saying that "work called her in and if she didn't
work she'd get fired", even though she had the day requested
off months ago and she wasn't even on the schedule. So believable...
My
other activists never showed up. I had ONE girl show up to help,
that was it.

As
soon as I was finally like "whatever...let's just do this,
two people", we set up and it looked SO CUTE. I bought a Blues
Clues tablecloth and we had a great spot. We got everything set
up, got out our pink doggy donation box, and I headed back to the
car to park. Out of NOWHERE (it was sunny and 90 degrees an hour
prior) it began to DOWNPOUR. I mean, you could not SEE a foot in
front of your face. This was at 545pm, and the game didn't begin
until 7pm. I decided to stick it out- rain isn't a problem, chained
dogs sit in rain, snow... I could handle a little rain.
Well,
nobody showed up for the game, and anything that we weren't smart
enough to laminate, cover, or put in my car got destroyed. Luckily,
this only included my ADORABLE donation box that I worked on forEVER,
as well as one poster, 3 leaflets, and another backup poster I'd
made for the event.
I
passed out ONE leaflet, because thats the only person within 300
feet of us for the whole 25 minutes that we got to stand there and
get drenched...literally, there wasn't an inch of me that didn't
look like I was drowned. I got pictures so you believe me...and
to laugh at...
The
world sucks sometimes. You try to volunteer your time to help animals
in need, and you lose your job, get screamed at by managers on a
power-trip, your friends ditch you, and Mother Nature hates you.
Wonderful.
