Barry
by Janet Winn and Rebecca Helwig

Barry at home 2

From Janet Winn who rescued him:

According to the former owner he is 5 years old. She brought him down to her mothers almost 3 years ago and staked him in a mudhole on a 4 foot chain and that's where he stayed 24/7 year after year. They threw him some dog food about every other day. I have fought this whole time to get him. Everyone in this county was constantly calling the sheriff's office and animal control about him. I tried talking with the owner several times and was cursed out and told "He is a tough boy." I guess we finally drove the officials nuts so they bugged her constantly to give him up.

I don't have pictures of the old trailer (that should be condemed) or the mudhole he lived in staked about 18 feet from the trailer. He couldn't even get out of his own poop. He has been bathed. He was a total mess with mud and poop stuck to him when I got him. In the winter it was heartbreaking to see him with ice, poop and mud on him. He cried alot and ran in circles and sat on top of his dog house trying to get out of the muck he was in.

He is gentle and takes treats very gently from your hand. He "smiles"at being told "Barry is a good boy and a pretty boy." He rode well going to the vets about 15 miles away. But he did come over the back seat to the front seat to sit. I put him in a kennel to bring him back home and he was very quiet and still in the kennel.

From DDB TN Rep Rebecca Helwig:

Hello Everyone!

Well Barry (now renamed Benny because their babie's nickname is "Bear") made it to Nashville safely. He LOVES his new family. He seemed to fit right in like he had always been there. :)

The boys are not used to having a dog around so one of them did leave the front door open and Benny made a run for it. He just ran next door and made friends with the neighbors dog. Benny is very good with the kids. They have a one year old that is as tall as Benny and they run around together with no problems. He is even fine with the cat.

They are looking into obedience school and want to start ASAP so they can learn how to properly teach Benny some house rules. I am very excited about his new home and think that this is a great fit!

I will continue to take pictures and send them out with updates. Thank you all SO much for all your help in saving this sweet boy. You have all ensured that even though the first 5 years of his life were hell, the rest of his life will be so happy and full of love. Thank you thank you thank you! This is what we are all here for and this is what it's all about!!! Thank you to Janet for sticking with it and getting this sweet boy off the chain and fostering him for the last 4/5 months, thank you to DDB for paying to get him vetted, thank you to Linda to getting transport for Benny! Thank you Brazils for giving him his "Forever" home. He will love you all forever for it.

Attached are pics of Benny with his new family :)
