The Dogs Deserve Better Good Newz Rehab Center
for Chained and Penned Dogs in Smithfield, VA

In 2011, Dogs Deserve Better purchased Michael Vick's former dogfighting compound near Smithfield, VA and moved the organization from Pennsylvania to Virginia to transform the property to the Good Newz Rehab Center for Chained and Penned Dogs.

From our Rehab Center for Chained Dogs, we change the lives of dogs who come from nothing—pitiful creatures chained by the neck or ostracized to a small pen—who exist outside and alone; in mud, dirt, snow, rain, heat, cold, and often without food, water, or shelter.

Angel, pictured above, is a prime example of just how bad it gets for Man's Best Friend when ostracized to the backyard. Angel was rescued from a Texas hoarding situation and transported to our center in Virginia. The photo shows Angel, her doghouse, and the entire area mud-covered and uninhabitable. She was not spayed, worm-infested, underweight, and had advanced heartworm, too—a deadly condition if not treated.

But Angel, like most dogs we rescue, thrived once coming to our Good Newz Rehab Center. She ran through the fields twice a day, played with her fellow rescue pups, and celebrated her first Christmas off the chain and inside. She was spayed, fully vetted, and heartworm treated, before ultimately finding her new, forever home and family.

Keep Up on the Daily Happenings at our Good Newz Rehab Center
by following us on Facebook: We Post There Daily

We invite you to visit us at our center at 1915 Moonlight Rd., Smithfield, VA 23430. Our normal visiting hours are 10:00 a.m-2:00 p.m., but we can accommodate most times by appointment. Give us a call at 757-357-9292 if you'd like to visit us and meet our current dogs.

All our dogs live INSIDE the home, and our daily schedule is as follows:

8:00 a.m. Wake up, potty breaks, and walks in our seven acre fields for all dogs, except those undergoing heartworm treatment or some other medical treatment which prohibits them from walking.

9:00 a.m. Breakfast

9:30 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Dogs move to group play areas while daily cleaning is done. Dogs have either a doggie door with access to a fenced yard, or they are upfront with staff and being trained and leash walked for potty breaks. Dogs are trained, socialized, housetrained, and receive behaviorial training on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week.

2:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. Naptime for dogs, quiet time for staff. Caretakers can rest during this time as well. We discourage visitors during this time so dogs can remain quiet.

4:00 p.m. Second walk of the day in field for all dogs who are able.

5:00 p.m. Dinner is served.

6:00 p.m.-9:30 p.m. Dogs are again in social groups for play time and worked with by caretakers both individually and as a pack.

9:30 p.m. Bedtime for all dogs.

Critical Need at the Good Newz Rehab Center:
Dog Care Sponsors!

Monthly Care Sponsorships

While many of our dog-loving supporters would enjoy spending even one hour a month caring for the dogs at our Good Newz Rehab Center in Smithfield, Virginia, we know it's not logistically possible. But, with your monthly caregiver sponsor donation, you can know that someone is caring for them in your stead for one hour or more per month.

Here at our center, we train, vet, care for, love, and find inside homes and families for dogs from most any state in the nation—as long as they come from a chained or penned or hoarding situation, they are eligible to come to our center. We've cared for dogs from as far away as Washington State, Texas, and Arkansas and from all nearby states to include Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio, Missouri, Tenessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky, and Indiana.

Unfortunately, in our last fiscal year DDB carried a $150,000 budget deficit due to extra staffing to ensure our dogs were cared for to the very best of our ability. The truth is we can't survive another year with this great a deficit. We need your support to sponsor care for our dogs in order to move forward. Will you help our rescue dogs get the care they need, and help us continue to free these very-deserving dogs from certain death at the end of a chain?

Sherri gets ready to feed the dogs. They are always eager to help with breakfast!

Our dogs are cared for daily by at least one full time staff member and one part time staff member. We always have a facility manager or assistant manager on site who do extra dog duties such as vet trips or home visits for adoptions. While we love our volunteers, it's just not possible for them to make the level of commitment required daily, as our dogs must have personal care for 13.5 hours each day. (Volunteers do provide much-needed training, socialization, and help on a daily basis. You are always welcome and appreciated.)

Chained and penned dogs come to us filthy, having never been to a vet, and having no idea how to socialize with people or other dogs, nor do they have any obedience training or house training. In short, they are a lot of work! But we are dedicated to their care and to readying them for a new, inside, loving home and family daily.

365 days a year. (Dog care knows no holidays; our staff works every day of the year.)

We also bring in a highly intuitive behavioral therapist two days a week, who works with both our dogs and our staff to train us in caring for the individual needs of each dog.

Unfortunately, the amount needed each month is more than is coming in. We are in grave need of ongoing, monthly commitments from supporters who want the best for our rescue dogs and can help us cover 405 hours a month (13.5 hours a day) of care and training for our rescued dogs. Thank you so much for your consideration!

Due to the fact that we currently work out of a home that came with the 16-acre property, the state of Virginia limits us to 13 dogs at a time, citing safety concerns. We have plans to build an immediate addition, pictured above, to double the number of dogs we can help at any given time. Current estimates to build the 13-14 bedroom addition are $300,000, plus it would require additional staffing to care for more dogs in a way that they deserve. We are fundraising for this addition on this site, or call us at 757-357-9292 if you can give in other ways such as bequests, stocks, or you have other ideas to help us accomplish this feat.

Good Newz Center

In addition, we have long-term plans to build a state of the art facility that will house and train 50 dogs at a time back further on our 16-acre property. Our current building would then become a full time, low cost vet clinic and boarding center for our dogs and the local community dogs. Our plans are exciting! We just need the funding to get there. We appreciate any and all help that is offered for the sake of the dogs. Thank you!
