DDB Poster Campaign
The
Dogs Deserve Better poster campaign hits five aspects of
our chained dog awareness efforts: physical needs, the generational
approach (passed down from generation to generation), legislation,
moral obligation and responsibility, and humane education
and emotional needs.
PLEASE
take action to educate in any way possible! We must help the
chained dogs and the penned dogs, because they cannot help themselves.
They deserve better than life on a chain/in a pen, and by placing
these posters near areas where chained dogs live, you make save
a life.

The
Number One Way to make a difference in the lives of chained dogs

Make a Difference for a Chained Dog
DDB makes a Guidepost Blog on chaining: http://www.guideposts.com/blog/woof-chained-dogs-unhappy
*******
Hi All,
I
am an American living in a rural pueblo in Mexico, and I have been on
your mailing list for a couple years now. I have two wonderful,
cherished well-cared for dogs of my own and it saddens me deeply to see
that the Mexican idea of animal care is far sub-standard to that in the
U.S. (If you think things are bad there, you should try visiting here.)
I try to do what I can in terms of talking with my neighbors and people
I meet who have dogs and illustrating daily examples of caring for my
own dogs - walking them on the neighborhood streets, letting them run
free in the yard, demonstrating affection and obedience, etc.
My
next-door neighbor is a machinist who has a shop adjacent to his home.
He has a three-year old German Shepherd and a younger Mexican mutt that
have been chained up since they were very small puppies. I have made
many advances towards my neighbor in hopes of educating him, such as
offering him a bag of treats for his dogs and mentioning how important
it is for dogs that they exercise. (The dogs were very aggressive, so I
never offered to walk them myself.) I avoided any judgmental
statements, as he is a Mexican man and I am a gringa (American) woman,
and I know the culture here does not promote treating animals well. We
have maintained a cordial relationship, but I always felt sad that he
wasn't doing the right thing for his dogs. (He also had a pregnant
horse that was penned in a tiny space barely big enough for her to turn
around, and I encouraged him to put her in a bigger space where she
could roam free, which he actually did do.)
Basically, I had
given up that the situation for the dogs would ever change, but I
thought of them often and would constantly send them love, affection
and freedom in their hearts. My mind was completely blown away today
when I returned home and there was a brand new fence around his machine
shop area, and the dogs were inside, roaming free unchained. I screamed
out my window (in Spanish, of course), "It's fantastic that your dogs
are outside - my heart feels much, much better!" and he smiled and
nodded at me. The next time I go to town, I am going to get a big bag
of dog treats (and some baked goods for him and his family) and
reiterate how tremendous it is that he has made such a change.
Regardless of why he did the right thing, the important thing is that
he did it.
If it hadn't been for you all, especially Tamira, I
never would have had the courage to speak up or hope that I could make
a difference in this situation. I am too poor monetarily to donate to
your organization, but I want you to know that I support what you do
with every fiber of my being. (I also vote for you every day on the
Animal Rescue Site Shelter Challenge.)
Blessings and Love,
