Dear Tammy,

Jenny Lawson, 20, South Bend, Indiana chained for 24 hours at the ChicagoIn Chicago, this year's chain-off participants were literally "in the doghouse".  They've spent hours chained to them, but never before have they been forced to climb in them, spider webs and all to escape the inclement weather.

It started with dark clouds rolling in and then hail stones the size of dimes, overnight the rain plummeted relentlessly as participants huddled inside leaking houses which actually provided the only shelter for many chained dogs throughout their entire lives.

"We went through 'hail' for the dogs," said Rhonda Sims, who drove from South Carolina to participate in the Chicago Chain-Off event.  It's frightening, cold, wet and doghouses provide little relief from the elements as chained dogs ride out storms; this we know from experience to be true.

The difference is participants in the Chicago Chain-Off knew it would end in 24 hours, for many dogs the end is nowhere in sight. Hope is a powerful tool to help endure.  Won't you provide hope to a chained dog?

Success Story
Murphy - Rescued After 11 years on a Chain

Murphy before rescue
Hamer, Idaho: Murphy spent 11 years chained in a boarded fenced backyard.  It wasn't until a board fell off the fence and he stuck his head through that a neighborhood boy saw him and ran home to tell his parents.

This is a dog that should have weighed 80lbs and was starved down to 49lbs!

Andi Elliot and a local deputy went out on the call and "persuaded" the owner to sign Murphy over. Later, Andi filed charges against the owner and he was found guilty June 1st, 2008.

Murphy now regularly goes to he dog groomer's where he loves to have a bath and a blow dry.  Murphy will be meeting his public on Saturday, July 5th in Idaho Falls and will even be signing pictures! He loves attention and so should enjoy this event.

Visit Murphy and Andi during Chain-Off 2008 Idaho Falls on July 5th from 9am to 1pm!
Find other Chain-Off events in your area.

Georgetown, Texas is Chain-Free!

Georgetown TX is Chain Free!

Dear Dogs Deserve Better Team,

I wanted to share our exciting news with you- Georgetown, TX is now chain free! The ordinance to outlaw dog chaining was approved by our City Council last night.

Your website was a tremendous help to me as I led our Animal Shelter Advisory Board through the task of getting this ordinance passed.

Here is an article posted after the first reading.

The ordinance will go into effect on December 24th, 2008- what a wonderful Christmas gift for our dogs! I am leading the efforts to start fundraising immediately to raise money for families that can not afford fences.

Thank you again for all you do, and for providing such helpful information!

Best Regards,
Christy Hullum

MOMMA FLO, Kentucky

Please help Flo find her forever home

"Flop" was the name she came to the shelter with, but the staff knew immediately that she deserved better and renamed her Flo.

Poor Flo spent the beginning of her life chained outside of a trailer. One of the shelter volunteers told her owner about the free spay program, but he did not follow through.  A while later, Flo was turned into the shelter with 8 pups.  7 out of 8 pups died.  Only one, little Keno, survived.

Flo has been at the shelter for almost a year - patiently waiting for someone to see what a special girl she is.  Flo has perfect manners and gets along with everyone (dogs, small children) and still she is overlooked at adoption events time and time again. Everyone who meets her comments on what a sweet girl she is - but nobody takes her home. She is the perfect dog as shown in her videos:

Please help this sweet girl find the forever home she deserves.
