DDB News 7/2/09: Corpus Christi Cussout, Plus More Doogie Court News
|
Dear Tammy,

Ever
been cussed out big-time by a Chainer? Well, I have, more times than I
can count. Here's a good one we caught on video while in Corpus
Christi, Texas, for our Chain Off there in memory of Shepp. Warning:
There ARE four letter words in this video, so don't watch it if you
can't handle the Texas heat!
Texas rep Adam Moran and I played Good Cop, Bad Cop. You know which one I was...I do have a way with men.
After
this freakout, Adam talked him down and really got somewhere with him.
He ended up apologizing and is going to allow Adam to rescue the worst
of the five dogs (see photo, below) he had chained, and work with DDB
to put up a fence for the rest. Kudos to Adam!
Corpus Christi Cussout

I'll
be creating a video about the Corpus Christi experience and our work
there for Shepp this week, but for now, here's a couple news story
links:

DDB
Chain Offs are HERE! Last weekend an estimated 16 went off nationwide,
site updates are in progress, but check out a few of these links for

Reed Rankin, comedian, writes the following commentary on the social networking scene: "I get friend requests from people I
don't know, and it makes me wonder why. No offense, but what kind of
friendship are we going to build with superficial comments about each
other's status, or by sending a virtual beer to each other? After I
accept their request, invariably I never hear from them again, except
when they ask me to join their cause: "dogs deserve better".

Can
you say 106 People in the U.S., British Columbia and Romania! That's
what we're talking about! But we still need YOU...Pull up a doghouse in
your own backyard and make a difference for chained dogs!
|
We have Met Our goal of 100 PEOPLE! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.
As
I sat chained in the 100 degree heat of Corpus Christi, Texas, while
everyone walked past us to the beach ACROSS THE STREET, I thought, "Am
I really making a difference? These people don't even care!?"
But you know what? It DOES matter!
Every
single dog in Corpus Christi Texas that day who sat out in the 100
Degree weather had 20 people standing up for him/her. No, it's not
enough, but it's a start, and that's what matters.
Remember,
this is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and our biggest awareness
campaign too, so reach deep, and if you can only sponsor your favorite
chainee for $5, then please do so! It all adds up, and gives that
person courage to keep on making a difference for the chained dogs in
their areas.
You don't even need to be a Chain Off chainee in order to create your own fundraising page and raise funds for Chain Off! It's
fun, you get to personalize it and tell everyone why you support this
cause and why you want to raise money for the chained dogs. You'll feel proud when you too are raising funds that bring freedom to chained dogs across our nation and world!
You don't need to get all
Fancy-Schmancy about it...you don't need a big elaborate plan...you
just need a doghouse, a chain, and YOU!
You can do that, right?
Even
in Greenville, SC, we're going back to our grassroots...and holding
pretty much an old-fashioned chained dog-people sit-in at a very main
street park, Piazza Bergamo, in Downtown Greenville, July 11-12, 2009.
Join us there, or in your own backyard, and MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Law Updates, These Empowering People DID Make a Difference! So Can YOU!
|
For 3 yrs I have fought local officials over the constant chaining of a St. Bernard in our tosing of the law:
O'Fallon, MO restricts dog tethering
Here's
follow-up article in today's O'Fallon Journal about the tether law's
passage--just in time for our awful heat wave. Now AC has the tools to
get these poor animals off the tether, especially in this weather, and
inside, where they belong.
Take care, Joan McKenna O'Fallon, MO

Time Limited Tethering Faces Enforcement Problems, But Would Raise Public Awareness
Huntington, WV. Thayne is to testify on this law on July 8th.
Councilwoman Frances Jackson has a passion for animals. She does not
like to see animals chained in the hot sun, frigid snowfall, and unable
to reach food, water or shelter because of the tether around their
neck. Jackson has been listening to the discussions on the proposed
ordinance. Despite a preference for non-tethering, she recognizes the
ordinance must be enforceable so as to allow intervention in extreme
cases where dogs are tied 24/7.

Dog a Day Summer Rescue Challenge Update
|
The Dog Days of Summer are upon us...and dogs will languish, suffer, even die in the heat.
DDB
has issued a unique challenge this summer: Let's Rescue a Chained or
Penned Dog a Day! That's 90 Chained or Penned Dogs in need of foster
and vet care, not to mention new, inside, loving homes and families. Can we do it?

YOU BETCHA! So far, we have 29 dogs rescued and in foster care or on their way to new homes and families!
Dogs
such as Max, above, about whom Rep Kathy Slagle says "When I first saw
Max, he seemed lethargic and broken. My heart really
went out to him. He had spent the better part of his two years
chained
outside. As usual, his caretakers did not see anything wrong with
his
living conditions. There was not a blade of grass to be seen around his
dog house and his dishes were old dented pots..." Read more about them and see the heart-warming photos and stories of some of the other 28 dogs now lovingly cared-for!
Who can foster? Fill out a foster form and get started.
Can't commit to fostering? Vetting 90 Dogs will cost a heck of a lot of money...can you sponsor any of our 106 Amazing and Dynamic Chain Off volunteers to raise funds to vet these dogs and for our educational and fence-building campaigns?
Want to donate through our website instead? f you rescue a formerly chained or penned dog, drop us an e-mail at info@dogsdeservebetter.org so we can count your rescue in our summer totals!

The Photo Book Project to Benefit DDB
|
Melissa
McDaniel is a photographer creating two photo books - one on deaf dogs
and one on rescue dogs. She met with Amanda Green, DDB
representative in NM, last March to photograph DDB foster dog
Sunny, and last month, photographed Fiona, a deaf pit bull mix
who was adopted from DDB, as well. Fiona will be in the
deaf dog book and Sunny will be in the rescue dog book. The photo books are in the process
of being created and will be available
at the end of 2009.
For this initial printing, only a limited number will be printed.
If
you buy now, you will not only reserve one of the limited numbers of
books, but you will also receive the books at 25% off the future sales
price. Make
sure to choose DDB as your charity to receive the benefits of the book,
and best of luck to Melissa in her goal to raise $300,000 for rescue
efforts!

Dogs
Deserve Better and Grimes (now Thayne) were in court 6/30/09 today
seeking to go over the DA's head and take the Arnolds for abuse via a
private criminal complaint. This complaint was turned down by the DA,
all for reasons having nothing to do with animal abuse...and all having
to do with what a terrible person Thayne is. Hello, DA, regardless of
what you think of Thayne, that doesn't deter from the fact that there
is plenty of proof of evidence of abuse, and you cannot take the law
into your own hands and refuse to prosecute just because your ego is
the size of Los Angeles. Funny that you accuse Thayne of taking the law
into her own hands, but it appears that is exactly what you are doing
now by interfering with due process of the law... Read More
