Dear Tammy,

Forgotten Then, Forgotten Now

Vergessen (Forgotten) is artwork by E. Muraton, 1890, purchased for DDB by Christine Ameduri. Muraton, an obvious dog lover devoted to her rendering of canines seems to have been an advocate against chaining in 1890. 118 years later, with your help, Dogs Deserve Better is finally making headway in alleviating the suffering that Muraton put on paper more than a century before.

People often ask how we continue to fight for chained dogs. How can we snap pictures of dogs hanging by broken necks from an end of a chain? How can we carry dogs with chains embedded under their skin into a Veterinarian's office? How can we sit in courtrooms and listen to excuses from people who would let this happen to an animal they had been given the privilege of caring for? How can we argue the obvious, that 24/7 chaining is inhumane, with people who refuse to acknowledge it without feeling overwhelmed and frustrated? And the most difficult, how can we walk away from a dog on a chain leaving it with only the promise of "Don't worry, I'll be back"?

If we don't witness the cruelty in the world, how can we fight against it so passionately? If we see too much, will we become indifferent to suffering? The more we witness the more passionate against it we become. We will look at the horrors of the chained dog as long as we can fight against it.

Every dog rescued and adopted into a loving home, is a victory that makes the fight worthwhile.

Press Conference Held In Support of HB 1065

Tammy Grimes Speaks at Press Conference for HB 1065On March 11, 2008, a press conference was held in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in support of HB 1065. Pictured is Tammy Grimes, Dogs Deserve Better Founder.

Approximately 100 supporters showed up in favor of the Pennsylvania State Tethering Bill.

Other speakers present were:
Rep. Mario Scavello, Bill Sponsor
Mary Jo McClain,  Plan lobbyist and press conference coordinator
Howard Nelson, CEO of Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA)
Adam Goldfarb, Issues Specialist The Humane Society of the United States
Amy Kaunas, Executive Director, Humane Society of the Harrisburg Area.

H.B. 1065 prohibits tethering of dogs between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. as well as the use of a choke, chain, pinch or prong-type collar and requires that the chain used to tether a dog be at least six feet long or five times the length of the dog, whichever is longer. The bill also requires food, shelter and water be accessible to the tethered dog.

Our sincere gratitude to those who attended and a special "thank you" to Rep. Mario Scavello and Mary Jo McClain for moving this Bill forward!

DDB Helps Fund Surgery for Forgotten Penned Puppy

Dolly (on right) recovering from surgery with her dog buddiesHit by a car at 10 weeks old and left in a pen to see if she would live or die. With no medical attention the little Pitbull puppy had two broken legs that have grown back wrong due to neglect and uncaring. Dolly,at her young age, already suffers from arthritis as bone sits on top of bone and causes her terrible pain.

Dolly was found in an 8' x8' pen full of feces.  Her water bucket was frozen solid she couldn't even get a drink. The lean-to she lived under had fallen and cut part of the top of her scalp off.

After being petted for a few minutes by loving hands Dolly was happy to follow her rescuer home. DDB assisted with paying Dolly's surgery.  We were happy to hear that Dolly came through her first surgery successfully. She is beginning physical therapy and will be facing a second surgery in another 3 weeks.

Dear Friends,

This morning when our Little Dolly got up she decided to try out her New hip a little.  With the help of my daughter being here she wanted to show off I think and was trying to walk around.  I was able to get a couple of shots of her up so that I could show you the exciting news...This is such a MIRACLE for me to see and I had to show and share it all with you... She is using it at times better than she ever thought of trying to use her hip before, she can move her leg!!!!! This is the miracle that the Love of all of you has brought into her life!! God Bless all of you,

Lillian Nesbitt.

Success Story
Charlie Breaks His Chain!

Charlie before he broke his chain Charlie enjoying life inside the home
This is one time we cannot credit DDB with a rescue. Nor can we thank a caring neighbor or any other human-being for that matter. Charlie, the large, fluffy German Shepherd/Golden Retriever mix rescued himself from life on a chain.

Dawn Ashby, Illinois had been to Charlie's home to visit and take pictures with the usual promise that she'd be back. When a week had passed and she hadn't returned Charlie decided to collect on her promise.  Dragging behind him a thick wire cable that should have constrained a small elephant, Charlie was waiting on Ashby's front porch when she awoke one Saturday morning. The most amazing part of this story is that Charlie did not live close to Dawn.

Then the inevitable happened, Charlie's owners went looking for him and knew he was with her. After much pacing by both Charlie and Dawn as the clock on the wall ticked closer to the meeting time, both were relieved to find the owners did not show up to pick up their dog and never have!

Charlie runs from the fenced backyard into the house and back with nary a shoestring as a restraint. Now the big question remains; should Dawn find this brilliant dog Charlie a forever home - or should she let him find it himself?

DDB Shining Star
Featured Rep: Emily Northrup

DDB Rep: Emily NorthrupDDB Rep Emily Northrup, Blooming Prairie, Minnesota is 23 years old and has been with DDB for about 18 months. Emily became a Rep when looking for help for her neighbor's penned German Shepherd mix. She lives in a town that doesn't even have a stoplight, which means very rural and thus many 'farm' or outside dogs.

Emily has a 5-year-old Yellow Lab named Jake and a 6-year-old Tabby named Syl, both rescues.  Emily is engaged to a very supportive man and works a full time desk job and the rest of her 'spare' time is DDB.

Emily and Josh have had 76 dogs through their house since they started with DDB.  About 45 of them have been chained/penned, the others are owner surrenders or strays found by local residents.

Her first DDB Rescue, Emily and Josh drove to Iowa City to meet Sheba a chained German Shepherd from Illinois. Sheba became Maya and can be seen on the DDB December 08 Calendar.

From the Mailbag

Letters from the MailbagTammy:

I've been meaning to contact you for weeks to share a happy ending, brought about solely because of DDB and Anne Zubris, your Dogs Deserve Better area representative in Wetherly,PA.

In checking out the Website, I found Anne, who lives about 15 miles from me, and I contacted her. Within 2 weeks, she had placed Bishop (who had been permanently chained) and Randy (who was running loose) with two friends who took them with the intent of keeping them permanently.

As of today, they are both doing wonderfully in their new homes.

Every time I go out in this bitter PA winter weather, I think of those two dogs and the fact that they no longer have to suffer in these freezing temperatures.

I will always be grateful to Anne for helping me, and to you, for founding DDB and making such help possible.

Sincerely, Judy Zukoski

Four Seasons of a Chained DogThe Four Seasons of a Chained Dog
