Where to Begin? It's That Crazy Time of Year!
A New Name for Worthless: A Hero is Born just went to press. I think Rocky Shepheard wrote and illustrated an amazing book for DDB. Thank you, Rocky. Worthless
is a chained dog who has never lived inside the house. He suffers
through cold winters and hot summers only with the help of his two
friends—Otto and Sly Fox. His friends plot to free him and they set off
on an adventure to look for a new life somewhere where there are no
chains.
They search for days in snow and ice until they find a place on the edge of a pond to hunker down for the winter.
But fate intervenes
and presents an opportunity for Worthless to finally prove to himself
that he is worthy of love and a good home. Will Worthless have the courage to face his fears and become the dog he has always wanted to be? Pre-order now. The printer tells us we'll have it in hand on or around December 10th, and you will have it well in time for the holidays!
Don't forget to order your Holiday Greeting Cards and Calendars...they're going fast!

New! Report-A-Dog App for iPhone
The
Dogs Deserve Better iPhone App is here, thanks again to Rocky
Shepheard! If you're like me, you are constantly scanning for dogs while
you're driving. And also if you're like me, you write down an address o
a scrap piece of paper, and promptly lose it, ensuring the dogs
caretakers don't get that piece of information that could well change
the dog's life. But now, you can just pull over, pull out your
fancy-schmancy iPhone, and drop the address in right there!
Allows user to enter address information for continually chained
and penned dogs. Press the SUBMIT button and it sends the information
directly to the Dogs Deserve Better offices. Educational information
will be mailed and/or an area rep will visit. Click here for a peek at the app online, or search for Report-A-Dog on your Apps application.

Dogs Deserve Better is the Proud Owner of a New Logo and a New Website on the Way!
We
are in a new phase of our development, and as such felt it was time for
a new, celebratory logo! Special thanks to Tracy Copes of Daftgeneration.com for the incredible and happy design. In another WONDERFUL development, Rob Michaelson of Michealsondesign.com and Kelly Page, DDB Washington Rep are
in the midst of an entire site redesign, something that's been sorely
needed for a long time. Thanks to both of them for an amazing job, and
we can't wait to unveil the end product.
American Dog Magazine Contest
Please vote for Dogs Deserve Better!
DDB and founder Tamira Thayne are nominated in a few categories, but if
you're going to pick only one, PLEASE pick VOICE FOR CHAINED DOGS! We
were the first group on the scene for chained dogs, we are the only
national anti-tethering organization, we rescue hundreds of chained dogs
from dangerous situations every year, usually at our own personal risk,
and we work our BEHINDS off to give these dogs a voice...they don't
want to live apart from humans, they want to be inside with us, part of
the pack! Please give us your vote today.
DDB Reps Doing Amazing Work
More Amazing work by DDB Area Reps:
"I
got a call 2 weeks ago from a home health worker about a pittie needing
rescue because the lady is on fixed income and cannot afford the dog.
Jada was chained in Theresa's front yard. I called Theresa and she said
Jada is chained as she is not house broken, and she does not want to
give her dog up which is what her adult children thought she should do.
So I talked to her about our services, and called Melody Whitworth for
advice......The plan we decided on is to get her a crate and focus on
potty training, and if that is resolved, to build a fence. Theresa wants
Jada inside as family member. Due to her disability, it is hard for her
to maneuver Jada in and out of the house, and a fence would help her
immensely.
Jada has been inside since her return, only out on the
tether for potty breaks and exercise. She gets frantic when you start
to walk away from her while tethered, and I think she will get over this
when she is no longer chained and has consistence. She is very hyper
and has no good outlet for her energy. I micro-chipped Jada on my
visit yesterday. And the neighbor has a chained dog in her yard,
too......I gave Theresa information to give to her neighbor about DDB.
So I need advice on obtaining fencing."—Kathryn Ward, Dogs Deserve Better Area Rep-Fayette, MO.
Plum Twp. man making sure man's best friend leads a better life
Mark Ritke,
of Plum Township, recalls the German shepherd he rescued that had been
locked in a bedroom without food or water.
Named Misty, the dog was
eventually adopted out to a veteran who had served as a veterinarian in
the military.
“I nursed Misty back to health,”
Ritke said, “and found a home for this beautiful German shepherd with a
Vietnam veteran living near Pittsburgh.”
Ritke is involved with the organization Dogs Deserve Better, which is based in Tipton. Read the full article here>

"My big foster boy Knuckles, now known as Ledgend, made it from Harrisburg, PA to Pembroke, VA today (10/31/2010).
Ledgend
had been chained for over a year when his young owner dumped him on his
parents because he ate a very expensive pair of shoes! The parents were
not able to afford to take care of him and the father has terminal
cancer.
Ron Hollister of the Phoenix Rescue Group in PA has been
going to their house everyday to feed and water him while we arranged
his transport.
He finally made to it Virginia this evening and is
doing great...people friendly, dog friendly!! When I say friendly...I
mean REALLY friendly. Having him neutered is at the top of my list
Monday morning : )
After 2 failed transport attempts, I coordinated a volunteer transport and the drivers were fantastic.

"TWINKIE
was picked up by Brazoria Animal Control. They said he was chained in a
backyard of an abandoned house. I picked him up from BAC on 8/26/10. He
had the worse case of demodex I had ever seen...I thought he was
burned. I immediately took him to Houston Humane Society for care. They
confirmed it was demodex and started treatment on him on the spot. At
that time he was only 8 months and suffering from extreme pain and
itching on his face and legs.
We have been going back and forth
to HHS every two weeks for treatments and it is now Nov 2, 2010. He now
is UTD and neutered. They also fixed his umbilical hernia. All his fur
has grown back on his face and most of it on his legs. I have decided to
keep him and have him be a part of my family....I adore him and
he is the sweetest loving boy ever.He now has a fur-ever home with my
family....THE END. —Cindi Lozano, Dogs Deserve Better Rep./Houston, Tx Area (To see the before pics of Twinkie visit the Successes page, but fair warning, they make you pretty sad! But he's doing GREAT now thanks to Cindi.)
News on Chaining from Around the Globe
Getting Dogs Off the Chain and Into the Home
After enduring the sight of a neighbor penning and chaining his dogs for
over a decade and filing unanswered complaints, Change.org member Della
Cook decided enough was enough. “I have had to watch a neighbor keep
animals in pens, tied to bumpers of cars, go without shelter,” she told
me. Read the full story at Change.org>
"Today was a momentous day in
Randolph County (West Virginia.) We won the first animal cruelty
case which had a jury trial. We waited in the courtroom the entire
day watching these proceedings hopeful that Blondie would get justice
finally for the embedded 12 inch collar on her 16 inch neck which caused
her so much pain. The perpetrator showed no remorse and finally a
jury of her peers found her guilty of animal cruelty specifically with
‘withholding medical attention’ and being ‘cruelly chained or
tethered.’ Thank you Sylvia for pushing for the cruelty code to
include those terms." [Sis
Bruner is the VP of FOHO. She is also involved with Randolph
County animal welfare. Sylvia Shafer lobbies during the legislative
session.]
SWARTZ CREEK, Michigan — Annie Carlson and about 600 others don't like the idea that a dog can be chained up around the clock.
The Swartz Creek woman has been working to gather enough signatures — on paper and online — to convince someone in Lansing to introduce legislation that would outlaw the practice. Read more>
Brown County (IN) Council To Consider Dog Chaining Ordinance
The Brown County Animal Control Commission is proposing an ordinance
restricting the amount of time a pet can be chained outside. The
proposal states that animals can’t be tied up for more than 12 hours a
day. In addition, animals shouldn’t be outside between 10 p.m. and 4
a.m. unless the owner is employed between those times. The county
commission is in the process of working out the other details of the
proposal. Read more>
