| Is Life More Valuable Than Property? |
Dogs Deserve Better E-News 10/10/07 |

Dear Tammy,
Choosing to value life more than property in a world where wars are continuously fought and lives are constantly lost over property it almost sounds like a pipe dream.
But
this isn't war, this is a neighborhood. This is YOUR neighborhood and
MY neighborhood and these are living, breathing chained and penned dogs
capable of feeling pain, sadness, loneness and understanding.
Unfortunately
they are also someone's property and even more unfortunate is the fact
that many people value property more than life.
Too many people value property more than life.
Many people don't want anti-tethering laws merely because they don't
want any more laws regarding their rights and property. Many people
want the right to chain a dog, even if they never choose to chain a
dog. These people are choosing property over life and they are
subjecting millions of dogs to live and die on the end of a chain by
doing so.
Your
neighbor's dog has been lying on the ground for three days. You've
called the Humane Officer many times, but no one has responded to the
call. You call Dogs Deserve Better. Tammy Grimes picks up the dying dog
and drives him to the vet. She is later arrested and put on trial
for theft. She took someone's "valued property"; an old dying chained
dog lying on the ground for three days, unable to stand. The DA says
this isn't an "animal rights" case; this is a case of "theft"; once
again people are putting more value on property than on life.

Pennsylvania Takes Major Step To Ban 24/7 Chaining!

House Bill 1065 has been voted out of the Judiciary Committee to House for vote by popular majority!
Five
years after Tammy Grimes introduced Dogs Deserve Better, it looks like
Pennsylvania may offer a little hope for the area's chained dogs like
Bo, formally a 24/7 chained dog known as "Worthless." Bo
stole Tammy's heart and gave her the courage to stand up against 24/7
chaining and penning for all dogs.
Though
the law may not be perfect and we always hope for tighter animal
cruelty laws, DDB is thrilled with law makers for taking this
giant step for the welfare of PA's pets.
The
Pennsylvania bill would prohibit chaining between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.
Tethering during the day and early evening would be allowed if shelter
and food and clean water were provided. In a compromise with the
powerful farm lobby, farmers would be exempt.

Newbie Gets His Fence, NC Fencing Project Frees Chained Dog

Tammy Grimes, Dogs Deserve Better Founder and Dawn Ashby, Rescue & Public Liaison visited with Amanda Arrington of the Coalition to Unchain Dogs during a fence building project in Durham, North Carolina this past weekend.
20 volunteers worked side by side to erect a fence for a low income family and their 10-month old Rottie mix, Newbie.
Newbie
waited patiently on the sidelines, playing with his ball, often
tangling himself in the chain, while workers began and finished a
fencing project in a little more than an hour.
Grimes and Ashby were also filmed and interviewed along with Durham Coalition Volunteers for a documentary.
Grimes was in North Carolina to represent Dogs Deserve Better at a speaking engagement for the 22nd Annual International Compassionate Living Festival.

Featured Adoptable Chelsea, Michigan
If you are looking for a new companion
to join your family this fall and for years to come, I just may know of
the perfect little lady who is so excited to meet her new family and
forever home. Her name is Chelsea. She is a lovely young
pup who hasn't had the greatest start in life, but certainly not the
worst. Until last month, Chelsea spent all of her young life
living outdoors on the end of a short chain. If you could call that
'living'.
She
was never abused, certainly not intended for fighting, and was given
food, water and a tiny shelter. Despite her humble beginnings, she is
very resilient and forgiving and make no bones about it: she is ready
to live a little!
Chelsea is good with other dogs, cats and children! If you have room in your home or in your heart for sweet Chelsea - Please contact Janelle: 734-678-2262
