"She's Got Mail!"
On
Day 17 of Thayne's chaining at the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Capitol
building in quest of a law, a strange thing happened...Thayne got mail!
The Capitol mailman came walking down the steps with a bemused look on his face. "I think this belongs to you," he stated.
Thayne, confused,
took the enveloped, and saw on the front that it was addressed to her
and said "the lady chained at the Capitol Building steps, Harrisburg,
PA, 17120."
They both burst out
laughing, and Thayne discovered it was from long-time DDB supporter Barb
Nozzi in Illinois, a note of encouragement, along with a $20 donation
to DDB.
Thayne had been
joking about getting a mailbox for her doghouse, and now she just may do
that. She got her second note today from Sandy Harrison in York, PA. She
was informed by today's mailman that they'd started a box for her mail
inside the Capitol! To read the blog from each day of her chaining,
scroll down to the bottom of the Fido's Freedom page, and help us by contacting the AG Committee Chair and members to get the law passed onto the floor for a vote!
Have you seen the video footage yet of Thayne in the rainstorm that flooded the city? Check it out here and then support her efforts.
Dogs Deserve Better's team has been working for legislation for chained dogs in Pennsylvania for the past six years. Legislation is once more on the table, SB1435, yet time is running out in this session, and November elections will put us once again back at the drawing board.
Thayne has pledged
to spend Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-6 p.m. for the foreseeable future chained
to a doghouse in front of the Capitol, fasting for those dogs who go
without food and water on a daily basis, and advocating for the
legislature to finally pass a bill giving these dogs some relief.
Thayne is twittering, facebooking, and blogging daily. To follow her on twitter, find her @tamirathayne. To follow the campaign, Operation Fido's Freedom, fan it on Facebook. Can you say 104 Dogs Rescued from a Life of Chains or Pens this Summer! That's what we're talkin' bout!
The Dog Days of Summer continue...and dogs across the country will languish, suffer, even die in the heat.
DDB has a unique challenge for the second summer in a row: Let's
Rescue a Chained or Penned Dog a Day! That's 90 Chained or Penned Dogs
in need of foster and vet care, not to mention new, inside, loving homes
and families. Can we do it?
So far we have rescued 104 dogs that have lived their lives at the end of a chain or in a pen!
Here is Tootsie's Story:

Dog #101. Knowing I worked in rescued,
one of my husband's co-workers asked him to check on a dog with him that
he was concerned about. This beautiful Catahoula wandered into the
yard of a very caring young lady who, while she could not bring her
inside, gave her food and water. 'Tootsie' made a 'bed' under the deck
where she lived for quite sometime. The young lady was getting ready to
move and could not take Tootsie with her and feared for what may happen.
None of us wanted to let this young lady down but we especially didn't
want to let Tootsie down. After my husband emailed me her photos I
asked him to go back and get her and take her to the vet immediately
where she would be spayed, heart-worm tested, de-wormed, vaccinated,
given flea treatment, and micro-chipped. In less than 2 days, we raised
enough money to have Tootsie vetted and boarded for several days. She
will be going to her foster home on Friday.—Shannon - DDB, VA

Want to Fundraise for the DDB Center? Hold a Bowl-a-Thon!
Monica
Severy, an amazing DDB Supporter, has taken lead on fundraising for our
dream to make our DDB Center a reality. She needs some good volunteers
to help her out! Who would be
willing to host a Bowl-A-Thon in their areas to help raise funds for the
training and rehab center? Monica has a package already in place
to include flyers, forms, door prizes, etc. making it an easy fun filled
event to host. If you are able to get a lot of support for the
event, we could raise over $10,000 at each Bowl-A-Thon. If
feasible, Monica would be willing to come out the day of the event to
help you run it if needed. Contact Monica ASAP if you want to hold a
Bowl-a-thon or be part of the Rehab Center Dream Team! E-mail her at monica.severy@cox.net.

Laws, Laws, and More Laws!
This
summer there've been many chained dog deaths from the heat, and just
this week a horrendous story was circulating of a precious dog who's leg got tangled in the chain and she chewed it off to free herself.
She's now safe and had her leg amputated, but these are the gruesome
realities of chaining, and more and more reason to pass legislation
against it. Below are some links to articles of places working on or
getting laws. Kudos to everyone who fights this fight!
