Chained Dogs Can't "Beat the Heat"
Let's
face it. The summer heat is challenging for all those who support Dogs
Deserve Better because we KNOW dogs are dying out there. And so even as
we find ways to "Beat the Heat" we know that there's no way the chained
dogs CAN beat the heat, unless it's by giving up and dying. They are
truly lucky to just survive it.
I was on Facebook
one day when the thermometer in my van read 96 degrees—the heat index
being much higher due to the humidity—and all my friends where talking
about how they were getting through it...kayaking, swimming, staying
inside in the AC...and although I TRY not to obsess because I know then I
only feel helpless and frustrated, I pictured the dogs who were still
out there, and I wondered how awful it must be for them.
Without shade and water, a dog is dead in this heat. In cases such as the Charles Bell case—even retweeted by celebrities—graphic photos show how the dog must have suffered, and it is simply inexcusable.
DDB CSI (Chained Scene Investigation) Director Marie Belanger
spends hours each week documenting and urging supporters to make the
phone calls and write letters on behalf of dogs who suffer at the hands
of man in times such as these with the summer heat.
But we must do even more!
That's why DDB is in our second year of the Dog a Day Program...because then we're actually
stopping cruelty and chain-ging lives! So far we are up to 70 DOGS IN
ONLY 50 DAYS! If we pay even $200 per dog for vet costs, this is still a
cost of $14,000 and climbing! Can you donate to vet one of our dogs rescued from chains this summer in our Dog a Day program?
Please read the stories...they will touch your heart, and heal your
soul. I'd like to give a personal kudos and thank you to EVERY DDB Rep
and Volunteer who gave of their time, love, attention, and even money to
make these rescues possible.—Tamira Thayne, founder and CEO, Dogs Deserve Better

A Big THANK YOU to everyone who chained themselves to a doghouse during Chain Off this year~!
We
know it's crazy, we know it's hard, and we know it takes courage...but
you did it, and you stood in their paws, and it mattered. Thank you.

Dog Days of Summer Continue
The Dog Days of Summer continue...and dogs across the country will languish, suffer, even die in the heat.
DDB has a unique challenge for the second summer in a row: Let's
Rescue a Chained or Penned Dog a Day! That's 90 Chained or Penned Dogs
in need of foster and vet care, not to mention new, inside, loving homes
and families. Can we do it?
So far we have rescued 70 dogs that have lived their lives at the end of a chain!
Here is Angel Baby's Story:

This is Angel Baby. She was given a beautiful name,
but not a beautiful life. Angel Baby has been chained since whe was a
small pup because her caretaker could not housetrain her. The caretaker
did not get help with proper training for Angel or become self educated
on how to train a pup, so.....out on the chain she went, never to
return to the indoors again.
Angel Baby has suffered dog attacks, chemical burns, and continued
neglect while living chained, and helpless out in the elements of the
heat and cold for almost 2 years. Angel has infection in her soft scar
tissue that is as a result of the chemical burns, ear mites, hook worms,
whip worms, is extremely underweight and was infested with fleas.
Angel has recently been released from her chain and has been to the
vet and received medication for the infection and worms, and is now
eating 'Timberwolf' food to help with her nutrition and weight gain.
Angel Baby is in a loving foster home where she has flourished in just a
few short days. Angel no longer has to be fearful of what lurks behind
her. Angel Baby now knows a loving hand, a soft caring voice and has
everything she needs to flourish and become a wonderful companion.
Angel Baby IS as beautiful as her name and Dogs Deserve Better promises
to give her the beautiful life she deserves.

Remember Gypsy Camp Hollow Rd. in Tyrone, PA, where Thayne was charged with Trespassing for helping Chained Dogs?
The
property owners are collecting dogs again. The CPHS Humane Officer,
instead of taking Thayne's evidence of abuse (no house or anyone living
on property, a dog with a protruding uterus, a dog with a huge tumor on
his face, and all full of worms) and charging the real criminals, he had
her charged with trespassing, warned the abusers he was coming back in
two days, let them take dogs out, and refused to allow any other org to
pull the dogs from the humane society that were given up. As a result,
the abusers felt they were in the right, put up a wooden privacy fence,
and have started collecting and chaining dogs on the property again.
Above is a picture taken with a zoom lens of what appears to be a pit
mix chained at the property. We believe they already have at least 3
dogs chained on the property. This behavior by our law enforcement, who
is tasked with protecting the animals, must stop! If you live in Pennsylvania, please join our coalition to limit chaining and pass the newly releases SB1435 at UnchainPADogs.com. Also, now's the time to contact your local Senator and insist that he/she support the bill!

Dear Harmony Fund Charities,
I’m so pleased to have the opportunity to support your work. We launched the website on Thursday morning and it’s such a thrill to finally welcome visitors to our online home.
Because of its dynamic nature and built-in social networking features, The Great Animal Rescue Chase
will be a driving force in bringing attention to the Harmony Fund.
Therefore I’d like to ask your help in notifying your online
constituents of the website and encouraging them to load their own personal stories and photos in our “Rescue Showcase”. (Yes, go load YOUR stories!)
The more amazing photos & stories we collect, the better our
opportunities are for getting placements with major media outlets and
experiencing growth on an exponential level.
Thank you all for the incredible things you do for animals.

When
I saw my friend Kali tied to a short chain along the Ganges River, I
felt I had to get her freed. She'd always been a street dog, free
as a bird. A couple fed her at their snack stand.
I pleaded
with the wife, but she just explained, in Hindi that I couldn't
understand, why Kali now had to be chained.
I sat on
the river bank without my friend, and did what I often do when I feel
desperate. I prayed. Instantly, I felt intuitively not to go
to the police, but rather to talk to whoever had chained Kali and could
set her free.
Rishikesh, one of India's Holy Cities, is a
peaceful place. In the four months that I've walked its crowded
streets, I think I've only heard people raise their voices to each other
twice. Only once have I seen a physical fight, and that was about
to happen now.
I walked back to talk with Kali's head
chainer. As I approached, two men were angrily shoving a cart back
and forth at each other. To my horror, Kali was now tied to the
cart! The short chain was wrapped directly around her tiny
neck. With each jerk of the cart, Kali, who is only a little
bigger than a Chihuahua, was violently jerked back and forth.
One of the men was the husband who fed Kali. I urged him to untie her. He refused.
I
was afraid that if I contradicted him, he or the other man (who was
drunk) might turn their aggression on me. But heck, Kali was my
friend, and wasn't I an animal activist? I started undoing the
chain.
To my surprise, the husband helped me, and Kali was freed. She was already coughing from the trauma.
After
a few minutes, the drunken man retreated. Now I had the
"ammunition" that I needed. "Kali almost died," I told the
husband. "Many chained dogs strangle to death. You must
never tie her again."
He promised that he never would, and I
think he's kept his promise. Every time I've dropped by, Kali has
been free. She now lives in the couple's home, as an
indoor-outdoor dog.

Tribute to Biddy, One of the Dogs Rescued from -11 Temps this Winter
This
is a video my wonderful rescue friend, Deb Young, made in memory of my
dog Biddy who was put to sleep last week. I rescued him along with the
help of 100s of friends after seeing a video posted by one of my
favorite people and CEO of Dogs Deserve Better, Tammy Thayne in February
of this year after living 10 years on a chain. Please watch this in
honor of my Biddy dog and educate people on the dangers of
chaining/penning dogs.—Cynthia Sweet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VPJHy2tjqSQ
Chained Dog Advocate Passes Away
The April 27 passing of Lazette Rodriquez was a loss to the community of Noblesville, Indiana.
For
quite a few years the City of Noblesville had outdated ordinances
regarding the treatment of domestic pets which were housed and tethered
outside in the elements. For several years Lazette,
sometimes accompanied by her mother, would approach the residents who
housed and tethered their dogs outside and ask them how she could
help. She often provided literature from an organization called
“Dogs Deserve Better” and offered them straw in the winter months so
that the dogs would have some warmth. She often brought
fresh water and even food. In almost every case the resident
was “won over” by Lazette’s sincere and caring manner. They
allowed her to come onto their property and access the situation and
attempt to make it better for the dogs. I have never seen
anyone more dedicated than Lazette to helping outside tethered dogs have
a better life.
A
couple of years ago Lazette went further in her quest to help tethered
dogs. She met with the Noblesville Police Chief, the
Hamilton County animal control officer, representatives of the Hamilton
County Humane Society, and lobbied these people and the members of the
Noblesville Common Council to change the ordinances pertaining to the
outside conditions in which these animals are kept, as well as the
length of tether and time that they can be tethered.
Lazette
will be missed by everyone who was blessed enough to know
her. Please do all you can to educate yourselves and your
sphere of influence in these matters, also please check a website that
will help enlighten you, at www.dogsdeservebetter.org.—Sharon McMahon
