Tennessee Orphans
25 Chained & Penned Dogs in Need

Daniel after rescueDonna York, Cookeville, TN sent out a plea concerning 25 chained/penned dogs. Donna said, "I believe the dogs do not deserve to live like they are right now, they are standing in there own feces and they do not have gates that open so you have to throw food over the fence to feed them."

Dogs Deserve Better helped transport and foster many of these dogs finding them to be "wild and scared" due to their lack of socialization.  When Molly and Daniel were transported to DDB Headquarters, the dogs were so scared and anxious to escape that Tammy and her crew were ready to search the woods for a lost Daniel after he did a Houdini act when he first arrived.

Kim, DDB Office Manager said, "We didn't think there was any way for him to get out, but we searched everywhere, then I heard a noise behind a box in the tiniest corner.  I thought it was a kitten, there was no way a dog like Daniel could squeeze back there!" Sure enough, after an hour of panicking, Kim pulled back the box and there was Daniel huddled up in the corner.

Columbia Missouri Rep, Melody Whitworth, with help from her husband Mike, took in two of the Cookeville dogs, Andy and Annie, into their home. Melody says Andy is really coming around.  She is able to get a leash on him now and take him for walks, an unbelievable task since when the dog first arrived in her home, he went straight to the nearest hiding place and refused to move.

Many of the dogs that come to DDB are not used to human touch and need months of rehabilitation and socialization before they can be placed in adoptive homes.  DDB is taking on a major task of building a Rehabilitation Center for dogs just like Daniel, Andy and Annie. We need your help as the number and needs of these of dogs are too great for our limited foster network.

There are still dogs in need of rescue at the Cookeville, TN location.  If you work in rescue and would like to help, please contact Donna York.  Or if would like to help by providing a foster home for a chained/penned dog, please contact us or visit: http://www.dogsdeservebetter.org/adoptionform2007.html

Tethering Animals Terrible
By Carol Carpenter

 Tethering animals terrible
Recently, during one of my frequent walks around Capitol Heights, where I live, I was dismayed by a sight that I have previously not seen in my immediate neighborhood: a young dog, probably a puppy, tied to a tree in a resident's front yard.

Although I didn't think too much about it at the time -- hoping that this was a temporary situation -- I began to notice in succeeding weeks that no matter what time of day I walked by, the dog was tethered to the same tree. I also observed that there was no fence around the property, nor was there a doghouse or other shelter for the animal. There was a water dish, but it was almost always empty and turned over.  Read more

Featured Adoptables
TUCK, Virginia

Tuck rescued and ready for his new home!

Tuck is a stunning four-year-old Australian Cattle Dog that DDB visited on the Dognamic Duo Tour.  At the time, Tuck was living on the end of a chain.

The good news is that Tuck was released by his former owner and is now available for adoption through A Forever Home Rescue in Virginia!  Tuck is now house trained, crate trained and enjoys the company of other dogs and humans. He also walks well on leash.  What more could you ask for in a canine companion? Can you give this gorgeous boy the forever home he deserves?

SHINER, Kentucky

Shiner needs your love!

Shiner is a wonderful, 7 year old, pure bred, Border Collie who has landed at a shelter in Kentucky after spending his life in a pen on a farm. After being a loyal companion, Shiner was turned over to the shelter when he was diagnosed with diabetes. His family did not feel they had the time to give Shiner his medication twice a day. Shiner looks a little funny right now as his former "caretakers" gave him a "summer cut" before turning him over, but don't be fooled - this is a gorgeous dog, inside and out.

Shiner gets along well with other dogs, cats and humans. He was a big hit when he visited the local nursing home. Please give this boy the loving home he deserves

Freedom Print Gives 50% of Proceeds to DDB through July 4th

Chia, second of the Freedom PrintsChia, second of the Freedom Prints: This print will give 50% of the proceeds to Dogs Deserve Better through July 4th!

In America, one never knows the importance of freedom until it is taken away. How many chained dogs in America lived inside the home until they 'got too big', or 'chewed something up' and then got thrown outside? How did they feel having freedom one day and losing it to a chain the next? Chained dogs deserve to be free and part of the family just as we do; yet some of them will never again know it despite our best efforts.

This poignant piece features Chia, with her before and after shots, an Akita who deserved and finally got better before it was too late. She spent most of her life penned and then chained in Indiana, was rescued by DDB reps, and finally ended up in Pennsylvania.

Here's to your Freedom, Chia!
