DDB News 6/15/09: 20 Dogs, 69 Chainees, 3 Outstanding Reps, 2 New Laws, and 1 Travel Tale...What's New with You?
|
Dear Tammy,
The Dog Days of Summer are upon us...and dogs will languish, suffer, even die in the heat.
But
DDB Reps and Volunteers are Stepping Right Up to make a difference for
chained dogs in two ways--by chaining themselves to doghouses and by
rescuing dogs from horrendous lives of suffering at the end of a chain!
DDB
has issued a unique challenge this summer: Let's Rescue a Chained or
Penned Dog a Day! That's 90 Chained or Penned Dogs in need of foster
and vet care, not to mention new, inside, loving homes and families. Can we do it?
YOU BETCHA! So far, in just 14 days, we have 20 dogs rescued and in foster care or on their way to new homes and families!
Puppies
such as the ones above, who's mother was 'chained and abandoned'
reports DDB Rep Alicia Schwartz of South Carolina, Read more about them and see the heart-warming photos and stories of some of the other 20 dogs now lovingly cared-for! Who can foster? Fill out a foster form and get started. Can't commit to fostering? Vetting 90 Dogs will cost a heck of a lot of money...can you sponsor any of our 69 Amazing and Dynamic Chain Off volunteers to raise funds to vet these dogs and for our educational and fence-building campaigns? Want to donate through our website instead? f you rescue a formerly chained or penned dog, drop us an e-mail at info@dogsdeservebetter.org so we can count your rescue in our summer totals!

Thayne to Travel to Corpus Christi, Texas to Join Activists Chaining on
Shepp's Behalf before the Hearing of his Abusers. Can you Join Us
There?
|
On
September 16, 2008, this peaceful and innocent German Shepherd was
found chained to a garage post in Corpus Christi where he had
languished with no food or water for over a month and with a gaping
wound in his neck from his chain. Shepp, as he was so named, suffered a
slow and torturous death that surely none of us can imagine. We ask you
to honor Shepp's memory by attending a vigil against chaining.
On
Sunday, June 28 2009 at 9:00 a.m., Dogs Deserve Better will be kicking
off DDB's annual "chain off" with Tamira Thayne, Cheryl Kaminski, Adam
Moran, Caprice Insco, Elizabeth Craver, John Sandoval and other
demonstrators against chaining dogs chaining themselves up in protest
of this cruel and barbaric practice. We ask you to join us on this very
important day, and to come to Shepp's hearing on June 29, 2009. Email
us for more information.
Download the .pdf flyer for this event.
Special thanks to Marie Belanger and Sherri Jewell for organizing!
WHERE: McCaughan Park, Corpus Christi Bay front next to Memorial Coliseum WHEN: 6/28/2009 9 a.m. to? Bring something to drink Bring all of your friends Bring a chain!

Outstanding Reps Create Outstanding Rescue Stories! And these are just THREE recent ones!
|
We happen to feel we have some amazing Area Reps
here at DDB, especially when you consider that these positions are all
still volunteer positions...this means these people hold down full time
jobs and STILL manage to take their work with DDB so seriously that
they are rescuing dogs, writing columns and getting articles
published...just to name a few of their accomplishments!
Here are just three recent examples. Major kudos to Susan Hartland, Washington Area Rep, Adam Moran, Texas Area Rep, and Patricia Aldering, Michigan Area Rep.

"Okay,
alright" I tell her. "but I don't think we should do this after dark."
"Its just too dangerous." Unfortunately, the call comes through
at 7:30pm. "He's ready. His brother will be there in 45
minutes. The mini- mart at 19th & MLK in Tacoma.
"I
kiss my three dogs goodbye as though for the last time and head out

The Big Fix and Four Chained Rottweilers http://voices.mysanantonio.com/adammoran/2009/05/the-big-fix-and-four-chained-r.html
...A few hours into the event, we got a call from a lady who wanted to
have her four Rottweilers fixed, but she was 90 years old and lived
alone, so she couldn't bring them. Myself and Maria from SNIPSA
volunteered to drive to her house to fill out the paperwork there and
pick up the dogs. When we arrived, we found a situation that horrified
me; four gorgeous Rottweilers living on a total of 12 feet of chain.
Yes, that's 3 feet per dog...
Grace's Story http://www.dogsdeservebetter.org/gracemi.html
After
a local news station aired a news story on the Kalamazoo , Michigan
chapter of Dogs Deserve Better, Regional Coordinator Patricia Aldering
started receiving phone calls and e-mails about one particular dog
named Leigha, now called Grace...

PEOPLE IN 25 STATES, British Columbia and Romania! That's what we're
talking about! But we still need YOU...Pull up a doghouse in your own
backyard and make a difference for chained dogs!
|
You
don't need to get all Fancy-Schmancy about it...you don't need a big
elaborate plan...you just need a doghouse, a chain, and YOU!
You can do that, right?
Even
in Greenville, SC, we're going back to our grassroots...and holding
pretty much an old-fashioned chained dog-people sit-in at a very main
street park, Piazza Bergamo, in Downtown Greenville, July 11-12, 2009.
Join us there, or in your own backyard, and MAKE A DIFFERENCE!
We currently have 69 people in 25 states plus Canada and Romania...is your state represented? If not, will you step up?
Our goal is 100 people...still 31 shy, come on folks, you can do it!
Speaking of which, and back to our all-in-good-fun Chain Off Fundraising Contest---which so far isn't much of a contest---we have 58 people who've raised $14,800 and 280 people have donated to help chained dogs.
I'm
hanging in there in third place, thanks to all of you who came along to
rescue me after my last plea---but I'm only a little over 1/2 of
the way to my fundraising goal of $4000! Can you sponsor me too?
Remember,
this is our biggest fundraiser of the year, and our biggest awareness
campaign too, so reach deep, and if you can only sponsor your favorite
chainee for $5, then please do so! It all adds up, and gives that person courage to keep on making a difference for the chained dogs in their areas.
Remember,
you don't even need to be a Chain Off chainee in order to create your
own fundraising page and raise funds for Chain Off! It's
fun, you get to personalize it and tell everyone why you support this
cause and why you want to raise money for the chained dogs. You'll feel proud when you too are raising funds that bring freedom to chained dogs across our nation and world!

My Trip to Loreto, Mexico by Monica Schreiber, DDB Media Rep
|
Unlike
many DDB members, I do not often see chained dogs. I'm blessed to live
in a liberal suburb near San Francisco, where the debate isn't about
chaining but rather about the city finding new places for off- leash
parks.
The next-door dog roams around freely much of the time, leaving her yard only to come up to sunbathe on our front porch.
So
I knew I needed to steel myself in advance of a recent trip to Loreto,
Mexico, a small town on the Baja peninsula, where I knew I'd see
miserable animals on virtually every corner. I packed some brochures in
Spanish and kept telling myself I needed to be strong if there was any
hope enjoying our vacation.
But of course I fell apart...Read More

Law Updates, These Empowering People DID Make a Difference! So Can YOU!
|
For
3 yrs I have fought local officials over the constant chaining of a St.
Bernard in our town. Chief has been on his chain for his entire life of
about 8 yrs. He gets no attention and food only once in awhile. All
winter he is left to fend for himself, on a chain. It's been
heartbreaking to watch his health decline with no local laws to help
him. After contacting our new mayor, I explained to him
the life that Chief has to live. I also showed him much information
that I got from your web site. At the next city council meeting, the
mayor appointed me to oversee an animal welfare committee! With
this committee, we created several ordinances to help pets in our
community. Every ordinance was passed! We now have a tethering
ordinance that states a pet owner cannot tether their pet for longer
than 10 hrs in one day. Since that ordinance went into
effect, Chief is now being brought into his owners house in the evening
times! He's also been sighted on a leash walking thru the parks. This
is victory for Chief as he has never been walked or brought into a
home. Although it is still not the perfect situation for Chief, it
certainly is much better than he's ever had! I just wanted
to share this wonderful news with you. You can now add our community,
Red Lake Falls MN, to your list of communities across America with
tethering laws! Sincerely, Shan Kahkola Red Lake Falls MN turbokola@gvtel.com
Thank
you so much!! I am beyond thrilled that the law passed unanimously!!
Now, it's education and enforcement time. But we have a good starting
point with the law.
Here's an article that ran just before the passing of the law:
O'Fallon expected to restrict dog tethering
Strolling through a well-kept neighborhood of manicured lawns and
suburban lovers of life should be a pleasant experience for resident
Joan McKenna. Instead, she consistently finds herself outraged by a
sight she finds equal to animal abuse. Read More
