Dear Tammy,

DDB Hero - Romeo, Rescue Dog AmbassadorIt is said that heroes come in all shapes and sizes and I am here to attest to that.  Romeo is an ambassador to rescued dogs that come through my home.  Romeo greets newcomers with his rump in the air and a wag in his tail saying, "Come on, let's play!"

Romeo, my first chained rescue is a true hero.  I'm sure he doesn't know it, doubt if he cares, he isn't regarded as one very often, as a matter of fact being a hero causes him to be regularly ignored.  Like all dogs of foster parents, Romeo gives up his home, his food, his toys and even his mom's lap as he opens his heart to those less fortunate.

DDB has many heroes who do not hold the DDB Rep
 title; members, donors, petitioners, adopters
foster families, pets and family; those who are making a difference in a chained dog's life in any number of ways.

This edition of DDB Enews I dedicate to all of the heroes behind DDB who keep us going and make us stronger, thank you.

DDB Adopters Are The Ultimate Heroes!
Mollie Finds Love
 Mollie goes home
Rescued in Illinois after 11 years on a chain, Mollie was featured in the enews after being pampered by her foster mom at Petco.  Her fairytale story doesn't end there. Mollie has been adopted into a wonderful home and lives in St. Louis, MO where a Tethering Limit is currently being put into effect.

Mollie's new mom and dad, Rose and Gary have become active in Dogs Deserve Better as a result of Mollie. They have been speaking with co-workers, joining the discussion group and have become DDB Platinum members.

We just want you to know how much we love Mollie. Thank you for rescuing her. I am going to order some materials off your website today. Words cannot say how much Mollie has added to our family. She will have a wonderful life and will live to be 20 if we have anything to do with it! Everyone just loves her. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!  - Rose and Gary

A lonely black Lab, 11 years patiently waiting for love on the end of a chain finally has her dreams come true.  Mollie shares her enchanted existence with her two Pug siblings Elvis and Simba.

Local Heroes Work to Break the Chain

Oregon - "Break the Chain" Campaign Needs Your Help

Ambuja Rosen, award-winning author, fights to break the chain in Oregon
For two years, Ambuja Rosen has put in 20 hours pro bono a week to pass a tethering limit for Ashland, Oregon. Ashland is a town of 21,000, 15 miles north of California. The county shelter director told Ambuja that if Ashland's law works, she'll use that as documentation to try to pass a county ordinance.

The campaign keeps moving in the right direction and looks promising. Ambuja has done almost all the work herself and is feeling swamped. If you'd like to help, from far away or locally, please contact:

Miami-Dade -  Petition Against Tethering

Miami Dade anti-tethering campaignMargery Glickman, Director of Protect Children and Dogs has launched a petition in Miami-Dade County to promote an anti-tethering ordinance.  The petition has already produced more than 12,000 signatures.  Glickman remarked that as she's getting signatures she's met people who have been victim or have a relative who has been a victim of a dog that was chained.

If you have an interest in signing, contributing your voice or know anyone in the area who can help this cause, send e-mail to Protect Children & Dogs in Miami-Dade or call 305-282-3527.

New Richmond, Ohio -  Anti-Tethering Ordinance

Perla and Shaka outlaw tethering in New RichmondPerla Kinne is a woman who gets things done!
Perla managed to pass an anti-tether ordinance in New Richmond, Ohio. This is a complete tethering ban, dogs may be walked on leashes, but never chained in yards. Perla said the ordinance passed without a hitch, but a month after it's passing Police Chief and a few others began opposing it. Council members feel the law is for the betterment of the community and should stand until they know if it works or not.

Braveheart gets much needed care thanks to you!
Medical emergencies and vet costs have been astronomical at Dogs Deserve Better in recent months.

Since January 1st Dogs Deserve Better has paid out more than $8300.00 in vet costs with more bills coming in daily from rescues all over the U.S. and beyond.

Your donations have helped provide care for many chained rescues like Braveheart, a Pit/Shar Pei pup freed from the hands of alleged dogs fighters. Like most chained rescues, this was his first visit to the vet.

If you would like to help more rescued dogs receive the vet care they need, please, donate.

DDB Stickers: Featuring Jack - Formerly Chained Saint

Four Seasons of a Chained DogWith Dogs Deserve Better Stickers you may get dogs off chains or out of a pen just by putting these on a piece of mail.

Our fourth sticker features Jack, who was chained to a tree, no shelter, no food. His ribs and hip bones protruded through his thick fur.

DDB Illinois Rep Dawn Ashby left a note with a brochure on Jack's owner's door. The caretaker later called Dawn and said she could have Jack. When Dawn went to have her sign the surrender form, she began crying saying, "I know, I read the brochure, Jack DOES deserve better."

Jack was rescued in Illinois and transported to Wisconsin where he was adopted by a family with a female Saint Bernard named Molly.

Our movement is growing, expanding, making HUGE strides, thanks to your help. Please stick with us, we really CAN change the world for chained and penned dogs.

Sincerely,

Dawn Ashby, Rescue & Public Liaison dawn@dogsdeservebetter.org
