Dear Tammy,

Thanks to all of you, Tammy Grimes came in second place on the Animal Planet voting for Hero of the Year! Many congratulations to Mona Rutger, of Ohio, who came out strongly in front of the pack; it's an honor well-deserved for Mona, and we'd like to congratulate all the amazing candidates for Hero of the Year: Carol Buckley, Kristin Cheney, Alison Gianotto, Tammy Grimes, Kelly Grinter, Sally Maughan, William Mitchell, Pam Porteous, Mona Rutger, and Anneke Vos. We at Dogs Deserve Better are immensely proud to have been a part of it.

Quick note: Yes, we're still doing our E-Bay Auction! (We were thrown off track a bit by the Doogie case). Targeted start date is now November 1-3. You still have time to send in Auction items if you hurry...P.O. Box 23, Tipton, PA 16684.

Update on the Doogie/Grimes Case

Both Doogie and Tammy are Still Alive and Walking!

It's been a wild ride since Tammy stepped in to help Doogie...the amount of caring shown by supporters, both long-time and new, is phenomenal, and will not be forgotten.

We are 'in limbo' right now, waiting for court, working with the attorneys, etc.The Doogie video has been viewed over 38,000 times on You Tube, and even made the home page of Netscape News, as well as Inside Edition, and believe it or not, the National Enquirer (on newsstands next weekend)! We also discovered that we DO have our fair share of enemies, some of which are subscribed to our list right now. (Hi, Diane.)

Best Friends helped out with a rally at the courthouse the day before the preliminary hearing, and they have been wonderfully supportive of our efforts. Doogie is doing well; you can see recent video of him walking on You Tube.

Keep 'Em Comin'!...

In my neighborhood called Duke Park here in Durham, we've got a small traffic circle....turned into a great space for public art, generally of the guerrilla kind. Few of the installations which have appeared there over the past year or so have been overtly political.....until now. This installation raised a ton of awareness and newspaper articles, way to go, Frank Hyman.—Coalition to UN-Chain Dogs, Durham, NC (Click the photo to read the article)

Well, I wanted to let you all know that I called Animal Control while I was a teacher workshop and THEY SEIZED the two chained dogs who were chained to each other and the fence on a SHORT rope. I was so ecstatic—I have never seen animal control take animals that fast. I went by my school today and went to the dogs backyard and yes, they were gone, their ropes were still there and my heart was so overwhelmed with joy. —Nadine Graves, Anchorage, Alaska

Last week, I was walking Romeo and someone circled the block to stop me and ask me where they could get a dog like him. I've had many similar requests before, but this was the first time it hit me that NO ONE wanted this dog. I couldn't give him away before. Since I rescued Romeo, he has rescued my heart and I couldn't let him go for millions. I want all my rescues to be the dogs people stop and ask me about.—Dawn Ashby, Illinois

Because of Rebecca in KY, I was introduced to DDB. I became more interested the more I learned. I am happy to say that due to the guidance of the DDB website, I just got my first dog surrendered to me that was chained! This little girl was chained out in all weather and when they let her in the house she was put in the basement. She would sit outside and bark nonstop for hours while their smaller 5 lb dog was always in the house. I just wanted to say thank you for being there and leading me to get this little girl out of this situation and into a home a comfy bed. Thanks!—Jennifer O'Brien

A couple of weeks ago I updated that while out of town I came across a husky on a short chain with considerable frost-bite damage to his ears. I had spoken with the teenage son & offered to buy the dog, but didn't get anywhere. I did get their phone number & ended up calling & leaving a msg offering to take the dog, give a good home, etc. I hadn't heard back from them & was in the process of finding their local animal officer, but then...the mother called me last night & they are considering giving me the dog!! She admitted they do not have time for him and realize he is living a lonely life. He has been on the chain for 10 years.—Sheryl Jacobs, Northeast Wisconsin DDB Rep

Thank you to DDB Rep Jamie Kowal for helping me make contacts to rescue the Saint Bernard. The woman is to sign the release form after 3:30pm today when she gets off of work. I don't know what I would do without this group. There would be a lot of mistreated dogs that would have no hope without all of you. Every last one of you is a hero! —Dawn Ashby, Illinois Rep
