DDB Poster Campaign

The Dogs Deserve Better poster campaign hits five aspects of our chained dog awareness efforts: physical needs, the generational approach (passed down from generation to generation), legislation, moral obligation and responsibility, and humane education and emotional needs.

PLEASE take action to educate in any way possible! We must help the chained dogs and the penned dogs, because they cannot help themselves. They deserve better than life on a chain/in a pen, and by placing these posters near areas where chained dogs live, you make save a life.

Educational Door Hangers

The Number One Way to make a difference in the lives of chained dogs and penned dogs in the short term is to get educational information into the hands of the caretakers.

Rep Spotlight · Shari Strader
I first started with DDB when I moved to North Carolina from Atlanta about 5 years ago. I worked with my good friend and fellow DDB Rep Heidi in Atlanta, and after seeing the conditions here in NC--and discovering there were no reps here in my area--I came on board.

Shari Strader

Shari, pictured here with Dawn Ashby and Tamira Thayne, working a DDB booth.

I work in an area where there are chained dogs everywhere. Some areas I'm surprised if there's NOT a chained dog in the yard. So many people I talk to say, "I can't get rid of my dog. I love my dog." LOVE?.......what kind of love is that? How can you leave someone you love outside in a dirt circle to live, neglected, 24 hours a day in freezing and scorching temperatures, chained by the neck? If that's love then I want no part of it.

This is a cause I am passionate about and will continue to champion forever. Right now, my focus is on changing laws because I feel that's the way to help the most animals. I won't give up...as long as there are chained dogs out there, I'll be there doing whatever I can to set them free.

Shari has two rescue stories featured in Unchain My Heart! They are: Donte: Breaking Chains and Breaking Curses and Wendy Fights for Wendell.

Folks Fighting for Freedom for Chained & Penned Dogs

Dear AKC:

Since I haven't heard from you regarding my recent e-mails (I just won't go away, will I?), I thought I'd let you know of a recent situation I just encountered a few miles from my home where two labs are kept in a fenced enclosure 8 feet by 8 feet.  The cement floor is covered with feces and urine, some so old there is mold growing on the feces.  The water buckets contain about 3 inches of "green" water.  When the humane officer visited, there was nothing she could do but write a warning because there was a dog house in each pen and "water" available.  Can you believe that?  Now, here's where you come in.  You see, the labs are being used as breeding machines.  One lab had teats so low they almost touched the ground.  The puppies are sold for $400-600 each making a tidy profit for the owners who care nothing about the adult labs.  These puppies are then registered with AKC (you!) which is how you make money off of these "miniature" puppy mills.  Now we can see why you oppose PA's proposed anti-tethering bill.  You care more about money than the dogs used as breeding machines and the unbelievable cruelty they endure in the process!  These adult labs will never swim or feel green grass on the bottom of their feet.  But you don't care because you make money off of their inhumane conditions!!

Now, I'll ask you once again as I have so many times before.  Is there anyone involved with AKC who reads this e-mail who has a conscience that will respond and explain why AKC believes PA has tethering laws that are "adequate"?  Anyone at all?  I'll be waiting ...

What, the AKC opposes tethering laws? Oh, yeah, wait, read this article.

On February 2, 2009, the Cumberland County, North Caroliina, Board of Commissioners voted unanimously for an anti-tethering ordinance, which allows no tethering at all. Our group provides free fences, food, shelter, rabies shots, spay and neuter to the pets of low-income families in Cumberland County. Now that we have unchained our furry friends, we are working to provide subsidized spay and neuter for all who ask. (We love kitties, too.) UCC is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charity. Our next big event is "Santa Paws".  We will "adopt" twenty-five pets and their families this Christmas. Many other animals will receive gift bags of treats, blankets, toys and food. Our priority is Backyard dogs.

McKinney, TX getting onboard with anti-tethering

Unattended tethering of an animal could soon be a finable offense in McKinney, as making that practice unlawful, except under certain circumstances, was just one of several amendments to McKinney's Animal Services Ordinance discussed during Tuesday's City Council Work Session.

I wanted to share a "last minute" presentation that I gave at a school in Upstate New York.  I went to visit friends and family last weekend when my best friend from high school asked me to do a DDB presentation for her "special needs" class.  "Thanks for the notice, I stated"!!  I did not have any brochures, pamplets, or anything, so I literally winged it!  I was not going to pass up an opportunity to educate the next generation.  I had to be a little careful because these children have "sensory" issues, so I did not want them to break out in tears over some of the situations that we see.  I relied completely on the DDB website, I explained what we do to "help" people make lives better for dogs that are left out on chains and in pens, etc, etc.  They were all very attentive and responsive.  I asked each and every one of them if they had dog(s), what kind of dog, where the dog spends most of their time etc.  I then went through the website showing them the list of Reps and that there are people all over the entire country willing to help with situations, I then turned to the 90 dogs in 90 days and explained the rescue of some of my situations that were posted.  I scrolled to the "mud puppies" and asked, can you tell me what you see wrong in this picture?  They all noticed the mud, how thin the dogs were, no shelter, no water, no food, no love and that they were isolated!!!!  It felt so good to know that I connected with these kids and they will forward their concerns to other members of their family and community!!!  If anyone knows a teacher, be it grade school, high school, or special education, do a presentation!  It was a great feeling!

Just thought I'd share!
