LEAMINGTON,
CANADA-- Christine Thompson is going to keep her black Labrador
mix dog Ozzy indoors from now on.
The
seven-year-old family pet was mauled by a pit bull Friday night
while chained up in Thompson's back yard at 23 Poplar St.
Thompson,
30, was sitting in her rented house around 9:30 p.m. when she heard
her dog "screaming."
She
ran outside to find Ozzy with his right front leg bent behind his
head and a pit bull with its jaws clamped around both the leg and
head.
A
handful of neighbours and the pit bull's owner were trying to get
the dog off Ozzy, said Thompson.
"They're
all screaming saying, 'The dog's jaws are locked on your dog,'"
said Thompson. "I thought my dog was going to be dead."
Thompson
said a neighbour had to use a broomstick to pry the pit bull's jaws
off. Ozzy suffered a broken front right leg and puncture wounds
in the attack.
Thompson
said she asked the owner for his name but he just took off.
"I
was chasing him down the road, me and my boyfriend, and then he
let the dog off the chain and said pretty much to get us,"
said Thompson.
"The
dog looked at us and growled and kept going." Thompson and
her boyfriend were not hurt.
She
called police about the incident, but they were unsuccessful in
tracking the man down, she said.
Leamington
police Sgt. Mike Symons said the pit bull owner could face a charge
under the provincial Dog Owners' Liability Act or the municipal
dangerous dog bylaw.
"It's
still under investigation," said Symons.
