SHEEBA - HOME AT LAST

The first plea for help we received for Sheeba came from a concerned neighbor almost three years ago. Sheeba was chained outside in sub-zero temperatures in East Providence, RI. Her dog house was too small for Sheeba to enter. Dogs Deserve Better's Maine Area Rep, Susanna Richer, was the closest Rep to Sheeba. Richer visited Sheeba's home four times, made countless calls to Animal Control and State Humane agents and even tried to purchase Sheeba from her owners - all to no avail. Sheeba's owner's believed that she was fine living outside, alone, in the cold and refused to consider re-homing her.

The neighbor, who first reported Sheeba to DDB refused to give up on her. She, too, tried to purchase Sheeba and contacted her State representative in an effort to change the laws regarding dog chained 24/7.

Still, Sheeba remained on her chain. Holding on through each New England Winter. As the years past - Sheeba became more defensive and scared. She would bark endlessly at every passerby. We feared that even if we could rescue her from her current "life" that we might not be able to rehabilitate her.

Finally - we had a break in the case! Last Spring, Tiffany Kellaway signed on to be a DDB Rep in Massachusetts. Richer contacted Kellaway, passing on Sheeba's case history, in the hopes that a new rep with new ideas, might be able to save Sheeba.

All of our hopes and dreams came through - In early spring 2007, Kellaway was able to convince Sheeba's caretaker's to release her to DDB!

Sheeba was transferred to a prospective adopter, Tracey, who agreed to foster her. Tracey stated that she really was looking for a smaller dog to adopt, but would hold Sheeba in the interim.

As it turns out - Sheeba was the dog that her foster mom never knew she wanted:) Sheeba now lives peacefully with a cat and a foster Beagle.

Here is the latest from Sheeba's new mom:

She sleeps in my bed.

She wags her tail ALL THE TIME. I love her so much, thank you for her.

The dog I never knew I wanted!

Sheeba, you waited a long time - but now you are in a home that loves you. Thank you for being patient and resilient.
